چکیده

Fishing tentacle nematocysts of the hydrozoan, Physalia utriculus, from Hawaiian coastal waters, were examined by light microscopy, as well as by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). Hawaiian P. utriculus has been assumed to be conspecific with the Australian morph based on general macroscopic descriptions. Ultrastructural examination using SEM and TEM revealed that the cnidome was composed of two sizes of heterotrichous anisorhizas as well as rare rhopoloids (less than one observed per 1,000 nematocysts). Beyond classification of the cnidome of Hawaiian P. utriculus, an unprecedented morphological structure was observed. Specifically, SEM revealed fibers (< 1 μm in diameter) along the spiral crest of spines of some discharged tubules of P. utriculus anisorhizas. A hypothetical model of spine morphogenesis was formulated based on comparative analysis of hundreds of discharged tubules.

Phyllosomas of smooth fan lobsters (Ibacus novemdentatus) encase jellyfish cnidae in peritrophic membranes in their feces

Jellyfish possess venomous cnidae on their tentacles to capture and consume marine zooplankton. Nevertheless, the planktonic larvae of the smooth fan lobster (Ibacus novemdentatus), known as phyllosoma, prey on jellyfish and successfully ingest both tentacle tissue as well as constituent cnidae, despite the presence of the venom-filled explosively penetrant cnidae or nematocysts. In the present...

Prey-specific encounter rates and handling efficiencies as causes of prey selectivity in ambush-feeding hydromedusae

We examined the foraging process in the jellyfish Sarsia tubulosa feeding on three types of prey: cirripede nauplii, cypris larvae, and Acartia tonsa copepodites. Clearance rate was used as measure of prey selectivity. To estimate maximal clearance rate (Fmax), we used a predictive encounter model with input parameters quantified from video observations. Both encounter rate and handling efficie...

The Effect of Cardio Gel and Matrigel on the Ultrastructure of Cardiomyocytes Derived From Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells

Purpose: To investigate the effect of cardiogel and matrigel on the ultrastructure of embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes. ECM: Extracellular Matrix derived from cardiac fibroblasts (cardiogel), commercial extracellular matrix (matrigel) and control group (without ECM) were cultured for up to 21 days. Ultrastructural properties of cardiomyocytes were evaluated by transmitting electron mi...

Ultrastructure of the chorion and the micropyle of an endemic cyprinid fish, Cyprinion tenuiradius Heckel, 1849 (Teleostei: Cyprinidae) from southern Iran

The scanning electron microscope was used to investigate the ultrastructures of the egg membrane surface (unfertilized egg) of an endemic cyprinid fish, Cyprinion tenuiradius Heckel, 1849. The eggs of this species were almost circular in shape, had a smooth surface and one type II micropyle consisting of the flat pit and a long canal in the animal polar region. The micropyle region was not fla...

Use of otolithic morphometrics and ultrastructure for comparing between three goatfish species (family: Mullidae) from the northern Red Sea, Hurghada, Egypt

This work highlights the role of otolithic morphometrics, shape indices and ultrastructure in the identification of three Mullidae species from the Red Sea. Differences in otolithic measurements were detectable in all three-goatfish species. The statistical analysis of otolithic morphometric parameters showed that otolithic measurements are good indicators of fish size. For all three species, t...
